When it comes to selling your car, many people choose to sell privately. Advertising your car for a private sale is often relatively cheap (e.g. Autotrader advert costs £30) and the best way to get your on sale in the market.
4) In most cases, you will not get the full asking price especially if your buyer can negotiate well. So it may be worth setting the price a little bit higher than what you expect to get for the car.
5) Car experts comment that for private car sales, the best months tend to be around April and September when people are usually making big spending decisions after the new year and holidays.
6) Car value led advertising - for cars worth below £3,000 it is best to advertise locally as people will not be willing to travel much of a distance to buy a car at that amount. Putting an advert in your local paper is one of the best options if you aiming to sell for £3,000 or below. You can also put an advert in the back window of your car. However, if you r car is expected to sell for more than £3,000, it may be worth advertising on the Internet such as on autotrader.
7) If your car is worth less than £2,000 and you are looking to buy a new car, it may be worth taking up the government’s car scrappage scheme which offers £2,000 against the new cars costs.
There are a few simple things to consider when selling you car, which can help you get a better sale:
1) Don’t overcharge - do some research to assess a suitable market value for your car (e.g. using glass.co.uk & autotrader.com). If the price is too high, a buyer can quickly lose interest.
2) Condition & history - make sure you have your car’s service history mentioned and ready for inspection buy a buyer. Of course the better the condition the better the price it will sell for. So try and get a wash and wax on the car before selling it!
3) Flaws - be reasonable in pricing the car if it has flaws (.e. beyond the normal wear and tear of a car).
