These days broadband is a must for every household as the need to be connected to the Internet is essential. There are several broadband providers with different broadband packages but which one should you choose?
3) If you go for a package with a set download limit, your downloading might not be restricted during peak hours but you’ll have to pay a set fee if you exceed your limit. Be clear of the limits and the fees you are paying.
4) Know you exit costs - Many broadband providers charge a fee for breaking your contract early, even if you’re not satisfied with the service you’re receiving. Make sure you do your research before signing up as some providers offer shorter contract terms, and some even offer “no contract” broadband.
5) Don’t be tempted by offers - most mobile broadband providers like O2, virgin, Vodafone and Carphone warehouse have free laptop (or similar goodies on offer) as an incentive to sign up for an 18 month contract. While it can be tempting to go for the offer due to the desirable good on offer, think about the total cost you are paying and what you will get for it. For example, laptops aren't very expensive to buy and you could save some money buy taking out a cheaper prices broadband elsewhere and buying your own laptop.
Remember: once you have properly assessed your broadband needs in terms of usage you are more likely to get a package that’s right for you. However, it may not be the cheapest broadband but think of it this way - for a few extra pounds more you have something that suits you best (also meaning less hassle!).
When choosing broadband, there are a few things you can bear in mind that can help you save some money on broadband bills:
1) Speed - broadband comes in different speed packages and if you only use the Internet for web surfing and do not need to make huge downloads then its worth buying a lower speed package which is cheaper. Most companies will try and sell you the 10MB to 24MB package whereas the average UK broadband consumer speed used is 4.1MB (ofcom 2009).
2) Unlimited downloads - most broadband providers provide an unlimited downloads but with in the fair usages policy which is actually a grey limit. Sky broadband removed this policy and and offer one of the best packages around with no limits.
